Background on the Get Healthy Kentucky Summit
The Governor's Get Healthy Kentucky Summit represents an appreciation for the importance of prevention and wellness in improving the collective health of Kentucky. It is only with prevention that the nation and the commonwealth will begin to curtail the rising cost of health care and the unnecessary toll that it takes on each of us, either directly as a patient, or indirectly as a family member of a loved one suffering from a chronic condition.
Even before coming to the Governor’s Office, the former Governor and First Lady, Ernie and Glenna Fletcher, had focused their lives on improving the health of Kentuckians. During his administration, Governor Fletcher felt it critically important that we permanently elevate the emphasis on wellness to the highest level in our state. In 2006, legislation related to the Governor’s Office of Wellness and Physical Activity passed unanimously in the Kentucky General Assembly. The office has since created the Get Healthy Kentucky program, which strives to provide all Kentuckians with information on how to increase physical activity, improve nutrition, and understand the dangers of tobacco use and how to quit.
For us to be successful in becoming healthier as a state, it will require all Kentuckians to come together and work toward achieving specific goals, the key objective of the inaugural Governor’s Get Healthy Kentucky Summit.
